FAQ's
FAQ'S
What Are the Different Parts of a Hat?
Several style characteristics are found in every hat. The width and the slope of the brim determines how much protection you’ll receive from the sun, wind, and rain. The crown of the hat is the top, which may be deep or shallow. Hats have open (unshaped) crowns which are then shaped or “bashed” and creased by the hat manufacturer to provide more personality to a hat style. The Indiana Jones bash on a Fedora hat is different than the Crocodile Dundee bash on an Akubra hat. Many country music stars have unique hats which become part of their country music brand. Wei’s stocks the George Strait hat, John Wayne hat, Jason Aldean hat, and many others. The hat may have eyelets or air holes around the mid-crown of the hat to keep your head cool, so it can fit tightly but still breathe. Some hats have attachments for optional chin straps, also called Stampede strings. On the bottom of the crown a hatband is often attached, and stitched to hold it in place. Hatbands can provide more structure and protection for the crown, and also add style by defining it. They are available in many materials. Most often hat bands are made from some type of leather to stand up to outside weather. Most hat colours are a shade of black, brown or cream, but Wei’s also stocks sassy red, soulful blue and other colours to suit your style. Of course a black hat will attract more heat from the sun. A lighter colour will attract less heat but dirt will stand out. Neutral colours of black, dark brown or taupe (often called fawn) will go with more clothing colours.
How do you measure a hat for your head?
Heads come in an incredible variety of sizes and shapes, and hats do their best to fit them. To measure your size, take a piece of string and wrap it around your head, going above your ears and over your eyebrows until the string meets the starting point. Hold the end point of the string and measure it, beginning to end, on a ruler. Based on that measurement and the hat's size chart, you can find your best fit. Hats made in Australia are measured in centimeters (cm) and hats made in the USA are measured in inches, for example 7-3/8. Find your closest and most comfortable fit. The fit can be tightened by fitting a card or other material inside each side of the sweatband.
How do you care for a hat?
Any hat is bound to collect some dirt, dust, sweat and general grime, therefore any hat will have a longer life when you provide some regular care for it. Ensure any brushes or cloths are free of oils and not overly damp. For a felt hat, use a soft brush in a counterclockwise motion. Wei’s stocks specialized synthetic cleaning sponges and hat protectors to extend the life of your hat. Have a question about our hats? We’re happy to help. Just drop us a line.
Felt Hats or Straw Hats?
More than fashionable, hats are incredibly functional, protecting you from the sun, rain, and snow. There are many factors that go into the design of a hat, including the material, the shape and many design factors that make a hat more wearable and comfortable and last longer. How you care for your hat will also affect the length of its service to you. Outdoors hats are most often made from felt, or from straw. Felt is usually from rabbit, hare, fox or beaver, made from downy softer underside and is inherently water resistant with fibres interlocking in every direction to help keep the animal dry and warm. This fur is found close to the skin, underneath what is usually thought of as the fur on the outside of the animal which is longer, coarser and less water resistant. Furs are graded by quality, including strength and colour. In the USA, felt grades are often defined by a number of Xs, but these Xs are not used in most Australian hats. Then this special fur is made into felt using different wet or dry processes to align and condense the fibres. The felt is made more pliable by working it, often with a combination of handmade and machine processes, contributing to the overall quality of the hat. The density of the best felts offer excellent rain and sun protection and this quality will increase the price. Some lightweight felt hats may be treated with Scotchguard or a similar product to help increase water resistance of the felt. Felt can even be synthetically made but most hat enthusiasts feel the quality is not the same as rabbit or fox felt. As an option to felt, hats can be made from straw or other land or water grasses or reeds Each of these will have their own inherent structural qualities. The grasses are woven into a looser or tighter weave to provide more protection or breathability. The material can be treated provide even more weather protection. Oilskin hats, usually made from treated cotton, are also famous for repelling water. Inside the hat, the sweatband is the only part of the hat actually touching the head. Sweatbands should be made of quality leather for breathability and durability. A quality sweatband also conforms to the shape of the head, increasing comfort. A good quality hat will have a ‘reed” inside the bottom of the sweatband which provides sweatband structure.
Where did cowboy hats originate?
Cowboy hats are a Western must-have work and style accessory these days, but they weren’t always. In fact, the cowboy hat originates from the Vaqueros, or Mexican cowboys, who would wear wide-brimmed crowned sombreros to protect themselves as they worked in the hot sun all day long. The hat has evolved over the years, having been worn by ranchers, bandits, and cowboys alike, to result in today’s stylish and practical hat that’s become a Western icon and staple.
What occasions should I wear a cowboy hat to?
Cowboy hats can be worn on a number of occasions. In fact, cowboy hats can often be worn in most situations out West, from formal to casual and everything in between. It’s important to note a few rules around wearing your cowboy hat, such as the fact that anytime you enter a building (restaurants especially), you should remove your hat. If the occasion is casual, you can put your hat back on, and same goes if you’re just eating a meal at a counter in a restaurant rather than a table. YouYou can wear your cowboy hat out to eat, to bars, to formal events, to work, and more. A cowboy hat is not only a sign of hard work and fortitude, but it’s also a style staple for many.
What if I wear my cowboy hat in the rain?
Most cowboy hats are designed to withstand some wetness. After all, they’re made to be worn outdoors. However, you definitely want to avoid getting cowboy hats soaking wet, as it can warp the material and leave unsightly water spots. Felt cowboy hats should be patted dry to remove any excess water and then allowed to air dry. Once dry, you can brush the felt clean to prevent water spots. Be sure to never put away a wet cowboy hat without properly drying it first or it can easily mildew.
What types of cowboy hats are there?
There’s no shortage of cowboy hat types, and you’re sure to find a style you love. The most common types of cowboy hats are the Cattleman, the Gus, and the Pinched Front. The Cattleman is one of the most popular cowboy hats out there and has the most traditional style. You’ll notice a taller, more narrow crown and a distinct middle crease with two parallel creases down each side.
This is a great style for formal events, like weddings. The Gus is similar to the Cattleman, but has a sloped crown. The third most common type of cowboy hat is the Pinched Front, is a classic style that combines the tear-drop and diamond crown, along with partial dents on each side. Wei’s stocks many types of cowboy hats, including these most common styles, so you’ll have no shortage of options to choose from.
I Know Cowboy Hats Are Made for Practical Use, But Can I Use Them as a Fashion Accessory?
Cowboy hats have long been associated with the charm of the American West, but their appeal extends far beyond their practicality. While they were originally designed to shield cowboys from the elements, these iconic hats have become a fashion symbol. Let’s explore the versatile world of cowboy hats, highlighting their evolution from useful headgear to a fashion statement. Whether you're a seasoned cowboy or simply someone interested in Western fashion, this article is for you!
Cowboy hats, also known as Western hats or Stetsons, trace their roots back to the working cowboys of the 19th century. These early cowhands needed a hat that could withstand the harsh conditions of cattle ranching. As a result, the cowboy hat was created. It boasts several practical features:
- Wide Brim: The wide brim provides ample shade from the scorching sun, protecting cowboys' faces and necks from harmful UV rays.
- Tall Crown: The tall crown allows for ventilation, keeping the user cool and preventing overheating during long days in the sun.
- Durability: Made from sturdy materials like felt or straw, cowboy hats are built to withstand the rigors of ranch work, including rain, wind, and dust.
- Practicality: The chin cord or stampede string ensures that the hat stays in place during cattle drives and outdoor labor.
While cowboy hats were initially designed for practical use, their unique style soon captured the imagination of the fashion world. Here's how cowboy hats went from the ranch to the runway:
- Hollywood Influence: The influence of Hollywood Western films in the mid-20th century played a significant role in popularizing cowboy hats as a fashion accessory. Icons like John Wayne and Clint Eastwood wore cowboy hats on screen, making them a symbol of rugged masculinity.
- Counterculture Symbol: In the 1960s and 1970s, cowboy hats became a countercultural symbol. They were embraced by musicians, hippies, and artists, who appreciated their non-conformist, rebellious image.
- Western Fashion: The 1980s witnessed a resurgence of interest in Western fashion. Cowboy hats became an integral part of this trend, with designers incorporating them into high-fashion collections. The hat’s versatility, with variations like the cattleman and gambler styles, allowed it to complement a wide range of outfits.
- Iconic Fashion Statements: In the 21st century, people continue to use cowboy hats as fashion statements. Celebrities, musicians, and influencers frequently incorporate cowboy hats into their wardrobes.
Today, cowboy hats serve a dual purpose: practicality and fashion. Here are several ways you can wear a cowboy hat:
- Outdoor Activities: Cowboy hats remain a practical choice for outdoor activities like hiking and fishing. After all, the hat’s wide brim provides excellent protection against the sun, and its durability ensures it can withstand harsh weather conditions.
- Farm Work: Of course, cowboy hats are still widely used for their original purpose: protecting farmers from the elements while working outdoors.
- Casual Wear: Cowboy hats can be incorporated into casual outfits. Pair them with jeans, t-shirts, and Western-style shirts for a laid-back look.
- Night Out: For a night on the town, consider adding a hat to your ensemble. It can instantly elevate your outfit, adding a touch of personality.
- Music Festivals: Cowboy hats are a common sight at music festivals and country-themed events. They allow you to embrace the spirit of the West while looking good.
- Weddings and Special Occasions: Cowboy hats have even found their way into wedding attire. Brides and grooms looking for a unique, rustic touch often incorporate cowboy hats into their outfits.
When selecting a cowboy hat, you should consider the following:
- Fit: Ensure that the hat fits snugly on your head. You don't want it to be too tight or too loose.
- Style: Cowboy hats come in various styles, including cattleman, gambler, and flat-brimmed options. Choose one that complements your personal style.
- Material: Cowboy hats are made from materials like felt, straw, and leather. The choice of material can impact both style and comfort, so choose accordingly.
- Brim Size: The size of the brim can vary, with some hats featuring wider brims than others. Consider the practicality of the brim size based on the intended use.

What Is the Historic and Cultural Significance of the Cowboy Hat?
TThe cowboy hat, with its distinctive shape and timeless appeal, is more than just a piece of headwear; it's a symbol of history, culture, and a way of life. Rooted in the American West, the cowboy hat has evolved over the years, becoming an icon that transcends fashion trends. Below, we'll delve into the rich history and cultural significance of the cowboy hat, explaining how it has shaped the identity of the American cowboy and captured the hearts of people around the world
The story of the cowboy hat begins in the early 1860s, during the era of cattle ranching and cattle drives in the American West. While there were various hats used for outdoor work at the time, none were specifically designed to meet the demands of the cowboy's tough lifestyle. The need for a practical, functional, and durable head covering led to the creation of what we now recognize as the cowboy hat.
The credit for popularizing the cowboy hat often goes to John B. Stetson, a Philadelphia hatmaker who, in 1865, designed a hat that would soon become synonymous with the American cowboy. Stetson's hat featured a wide brim for shade, a high crown for ventilation, and a chin cord to keep it secure.
Cowboys quickly adopted the Stetson hat, thanks to its practicality. Over time, each cowboy made modifications to suit their individual needs, giving rise to different styles, such as the cattleman, the gambler, and the flat-brimmed hat.
Cowboy hats were originally crafted from beaver or rabbit fur felt for durability. Straw hats were also popular during hot weather. Today, cowboy hats are made from a variety of materials, including wool felt, fur felt, straw, and leather.
The cowboy hat's cultural significance extends far beyond its practical origins. It has become an emblem of the American West and a symbol of the cowboy's way of life. Let's explore the various facets of its cultural importance:
- Identity: The cowboy hat is a defining element of the cowboy's identity. It represents rugged individualism, self-sufficiency, and a deep connection to the land.
- Symbolism: The cowboy hat has come to symbolize the American West, evoking images of wide-open plains, cattle ranches, and a free-spirited way of life.
- Hollywood: The cowboy hat gained widespread popularity through Hollywood Western films. Legendary actors like John Wayne and Clint Eastwood cemented its status as a fashion accessory.
- Music: Country music stars embraced the cowboy hat as part of their signature style. Icons like Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and Dolly Parton contributed to the hat’s cultural significance.
Cowboy hats have evolved into a fashion statement beyond their practical use. They are worn by people of all backgrounds, reflecting a sense of individuality, rebellion, and style.Cowboy hats have even found their way into high-fashion collections, with designers incorporating them into runway shows and fashion shoots. Their versatility allows them to complement a wide range of outfits.
In addition, these hats play an important role in certain events. For example, cowboy hats have become a charming addition to rustic and Western-themed weddings. Brides and grooms often incorporate cowboy hats into their wedding for a unique, authentic touch. Cowboy hats have left an indelible mark on global fashion, influencing styles and trends in countries around the globe.
Clearly, the cowboy hat is not just an accessory. In fact, it's a symbol of history and culture. Its origins in the American West and its evolution from a practical head covering to a fashion statement have solidified its significance. The cowboy hat represents the spirit of adventure, independence, and the untamed frontier. It has influenced popular culture, fashion, and even international perceptions of the American West.

How Do I Choose the Right Cowboy Hat for Me?
The cowboy hat, with its iconic silhouette and timeless charm, is a symbol of Western identity. No matter who you are, choosing the right cowboy hat is essential to complete your look. At Wei's Western Wear, we understand the importance of finding the perfect cowboy hat. In this guide, we'll take you through the steps to choosing the hat that suits you best.
Before we dive into the process, let's understand the basic elements of a cowboy hat:
- Crown: The top part of the hat that covers the head.
- Brim: The wide, flat rim that extends out from the crown and provides shade.
- Hat Band: A decorative band that encircles the base of the crown, often adding a touch of personality.
- Chin Cord: A cord or strap that can be added to secure the hat during windy conditions or strenuous activities.
The material you choose for your hat is important. Here are some of the most common materials:
- Felt: Felt cowboy hats, often made from rabbit or beaver fur, are known for their durability and classic look. They are suitable for cooler weather and formal occasions.
- Straw: Straw cowboy hats are lightweight and breathable, making them ideal for hot weather. They come in various weaves, providing a range of textures and styles.
- Leather: Leather cowboy hats exude a rugged charm and can be a great choice for a unique, rustic look. They work well in various weather conditions.
In addition, the crown style of your hat can significantly impact its overall appearance. Here are some common options:
- Cattleman: The cattleman crown is the most traditional and recognizable style. It features a crease down the center with symmetrical dents on each side.
- Gambler: The gambler crown has a flat top with a slight slope towards the front.
- Teardrop: The teardrop crown combines elements of both the cattleman and gambler styles, featuring a teardrop-shaped crease with symmetrical dents.
- Open Crown: An open crown cowboy hat is uncreased, allowing you to shape it to your preference. This style offers the most customization options.
Moreover, you need to consider the width of the brim. You can choose from the following:
- Wide: A wide brim provides protection against the sun and a bold, iconic look. It's perfect for making a statement at outdoor events and festivals.
- Medium: A medium-width brim strikes the right balance between fashion and practicality. It's versatile and complements a wide range of outfits.
- Narrow: If you prefer a more understated look, a narrow brim is both sleek and modern.
Though this may seem odd, your face shape can play a significant role in determining which hat to choose. Here are some general guidelines:
- Oval Face: Lucky you! Oval faces are versatile and look good in most hat styles.
- Round Face: Opt for a hat with an angular crown and medium brim to add some definition to your face.
- Square Face: Choose a hat with a rounder crown and a wider brim to soften your features.
- Long Face: A hat with a medium crown height and a medium brim can help balance the length of your face.
- Heart-Shaped Face: Consider a hat with a medium brim and a teardrop or gambler crown to complement your features.
When selecting a hat, it's crucial to try it on before making a decision. Visit a store or boutique that specializes in Western wear and take your time trying on different styles, materials, and sizes. Pay attention to how the hat feels on your head and whether it complements your overall style.
Proper sizing is essential to ensure your hat is both comfortable and secure. Measure the circumference of your head just above your eyebrows and ears. Ensure the tape is snug but not too tight.
Also, keep in mind that cowboy hats are typically sized in inches or centimeters. Use your head measurement to determine your hat size based on the brand's sizing chart. If the hat is loose, you can add foam sizing tape or sweatbands to achieve a snug fit.
To make your hat truly unique, consider several customization options, such as hat bands, accessories, or custom embroidery.
In conclusion, choosing the right cowboy hat will allow you to express your personality. Consider the material, crown style, brim width, face shape, and fit to find the perfect hat for you. Here at Wei's Western Wear, we offer a wide selection of high-quality hats to suit your preferences. Visit our store and explore our collection to find the cowboy hat that’s right for you!
